It is not possible to simply imagine what I felt as my whole world suddenly got flushed down the toilet of human history when the most lethal military machine ever known to man rolled over the top of us. The machine cared for no one, and it spared no one. I have to tell you what it was actually like or you will never believe it.
Until the summer of 1940, I had experienced a relatively typical childhood. That all ended abruptly a month before my fifteenth birthday when the Nazi death machine destroyed all semblances of sanity and compassion, and my serene world decayed into complete madness. I was not afforded the luxury of normal maturation but was hurled into the adult world at hyper speed as overnight I became the guarantor of survival for my parents and myself. I fought with the underground and played cat and mouse with the Gestapo. Betrayal was the enemy living next door; hunger was my closest friend; and revenge became a bitter sweet poison. Those years spent in war scarred me forever. I am Eveline, and these are the Tales of a War Bride.
Add heat to carbon and iron to make steel. That was the nature of the tumultuous courtship and marriage that bonded Eveline and Mac together for fifty-eight years. Theirs is a story everyone can find themselves in.
Eveline came to America from war torn Europe to escape hypocrisy and find revenge. Her revenge cost her five years of living on the nervous edge of survival. Those years were filled with events of rape and attempted murder, raw courage and brutal vengeance, and hatred of the deepest sort. They were also a time of love and betrayal, strength of character and occasional weakness of decisions. She is a loving and protective mother caught in a dragnet of terrible human events. And then along came Mac.
Mac was raised in the tough neighborhoods of Depression Era Los Angles. He became an amateur boxer and a street drag racer but with the advent of war he joined the Navy and fought from the deck of an aircraft carrier at Guadalcanal, and Peleliu. He shot down kamikaze planes that missed him by as little as fifteen feet while other carriers burned all around him at Leyte Gulf, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. Torpedoes barely missed his ship forty feet directly below him but he made it to Tokyo Bay for the surrender. Reassigned to Jacksonville, Florida, he met and courted Eveline.
This book is not a commentary. It is also not a traditional study curriculum. It is instead a journey! It is a journey into the mind and words of the Apostle Paul and the Holy Spirit who directed his every move.
It is three books in one. Part one is a "Verse by Verse" study. Part two is a "Thematic" study of groups of verses sharing a common theme, action or event. Part three is a "Chapter" study of the main ideas and common thread of understanding found in each chapter.
Though the Authorized King James Version is the mainstay of this study, yet twenty-one different versions of the Bible, spanning nearly 500 years of writing, were also used to secure the broadest possible selection of legitimate understandings.
The writing style of this book uses the ancient Socratic Teaching Method whereby the asking of questions provides the primary teaching vehicle. Though this method is 2500 years old, it remains the most effective teaching method known to man.
Like other books in the "Getting to Know" series, this book is not a traditional commentary or study curriculum. It is, instead, a journey into the mind and words of the apostle Paul and the Holy Spirit who directed his every move.
Though this book maintains the three books in one, King James version focus, with twenty-one referenced other versions; and Socratic teaching method structure, yet what makes this journey most unique is the letter itself. It is Paul's last epistle, written from death row in a Roman prison, to the cadence of unfinished business and the echo of the headsmen's sandals on cobblestone flooring.
